There is a lot to be learned about the world we live in and the people that we are interacting with on a regular basis. Because of that, we may be trying to determine how we can engage with people more effectively and how we may be able to have a deeper appreciation for all that is going on around us. How are we to know what we need to be able to do to respectfully engage with culture?
Engage with people of other cultures
Engaging with people of other cultures and backgrounds can be a significant part of learning how to respectfully interact with their culture and the people. There are so many people in your local community that come from different backgrounds that you can learn a lot by just interacting with them and learning more about them.
Travel and visit places where you can be immersed in culture
Too many of us are stuck in our own bubbles, which can be problematic when you’re trying to learn how to engage with different people from different backgrounds. Taking the time to travel so that you can interact with other people doesn’t only mean that you get to see new sights, but that you’re also going to get a taste of what these cultures engage with every single day. Consider going to places that are off of the beaten path and see what parts of culture that you can learn more about as you visit these places.
If you’re imitating a culture with art, music, or anything else, consider working directly with someone in that culture
When you’re a creative person, you get inspired by pretty much anything and everything that you come into contact with. In some cases, you may accidentally end up appropriating culture instead of appreciating it – and that can be a big problem. If you’re doing any sort of project that is built off a culture other than your own, be sure that you’re interacting with and working with people from that culture so that you can respect what it has to offer in your art.
Don’t dismiss someone or something due to the culture they are associated with
Too many of us are quick to dismiss someone or something because of the associated culture – and that isn’t how it should be! The fact is, everyone is different, and our cultures make us who we are. And, due to that, we should learn to be understanding and try to “get on their level”. Empathy can go a long way and, with some help, we can work together to rebuild a global village.
Finding ways to engage with cultures and to learn as much as possible about the people who are a part of these cultures can be advantageous and will teach us a lot about what it is that we may wish to do to make our world a better place. Learn about international cultures and see how engaging with them can make a difference to everyone in our global community.
